What you tell yourself….. COUNTS!!!  IT MATTERS!!

what are you telling yourself-thinking-1What you tell yourself….. COUNTS!!!  IT MATTERS!! In the bible, we see a woman who makes this fact very clear.  She is called: “THE WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD”….  In the book of Luke 8:41-48, it says that there came a man named Jairus; a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell at the feet of Jesus begging Him to come to his house, for his only daughter of about twelve years of age was dying. But as Jesus went, the multitudes pressed upon Him.

Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped.  And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?”

When all denied, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”  But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.”

Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately.  And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”

Now this woman received her healing because she told herself that if she could just touch a portion of Jesus’ clothing, she would be healed (Mark 5:28).  And it came to pass just as she said.  But, what are you telling yourself?

The illustration of this woman is amazing because it shows the ability you and I have through faith… of attracting God’s attention to the extent that He’ll stop whatever He’s doing to focus on us. The bible says that Jesus was on His way to heal Jairus’ daughter which was at the point of death.  But before Jesus was able to reach the door of the house, a woman, with no intentions of trying to be seen, touched a portion of His garment, and changed the whole course of history in one moment.  The faith of this woman caused Jesus to stop in the middle of what He was doing, to find out who she was!  WOW!

This is very interesting; because we have a little girl who is at the point of death, and yet the little girl’s deliverance is delayed on account of a woman who exercised so much faith, that the Excitement of Jesus prevented Him to proceed without finding out who she was.  Jesus, of course, already knew that He would save the little girl’s life, but His point in stopping in the middle of what He was doing, was to reveal to all the world the kind of faith that attracts His attention.  The little girl could had been healed long time ago, had the father had the faith to ask Jesus to just speak the Word that his child be healed, but instead, he wanted Jesus to come all the way to his house to heal his daughter.  We all fall short of exercising the kind of faith that God enjoys because we are constantly surrounded by a negative and doubtful environment.  That’s why it’s very important to control what you tell yourself.  What are you telling yourself?

sad-woman-silhouetteRemember, it’s important to understand that this woman was exercising more than just an ordinary kind of faith; she had survived 12 years of embarrassing pain, shame, and misery while at the same time, never giving up on her deliverance.

So before any of us take for granted that we can operate under this same kind of faith, let us first have a clear understanding of the type of trial and tribulation this woman been through, to better appreciation why Jesus was so moved to acknowledge her faith.

The Bible says that this woman had an issue of blood, which is simply another way of saying that she was having her menstrual cycle or her Period.  A woman’s Period is that time of the month where she discharges blood through the cervix due to the body shedding the lining of the uterus. And this particular blood flow usually last between 3-7 days each month.  But in the case of this woman, her menstrual cycle never shut off, but proceeded for the next 12 years!  Can you imagine bleeding for 12 years?  That’s a serious situation!

child in first gradeTo better explain what 12 years is; here is an example; let’s say for instance, this woman had a Y7son who was in first grade at the start of her sickness, this would mean, that her healing didn’t take place until after her son graduated from High School.  12 YEARS!  Her cycle was supposed to end within three to seven days but lasted 12 years.  Yet, throughout those 12 years, she never gave up believing that she would be healed.  She continued to encourage herself by what she told herself…… What are you telling yourself?

Many would have given up by the end of 2 to 3 years, but she kept the faith for 12 years.  Think about it. Imagine being in her situation;  dealing with off and on cramps everyday of the week;  no place to go to buy tampons or maxi-pads that helps with the dilemma, but instead,  have to find and borrow un-reusable rags to help keep clean every day of the week.  Your community would consider you to be impure and unfit to socialize in public settings.  Can you imagine being in that setting for 12years?

What are you telling yourself-thinking-2What do you do, when something that is supposed to be simple, turns out to be the worse struggle of your life?  What do you do when your marriage is supposed to be heavenly, but it turns out to be the worse hell you ever seen?  What do you do when you go to the doctor for a regular check up, feeling as good as always, only to find out that something was discovered in your body that will only allow you to live for the next 6 months?  I don’t know what you would do, but I can tell you what this woman did!  She got up every morning telling herself, “I shall be healed!” ….. What are you telling yourself?

It certainly wasn’t easy keeping herself motivated.  No doubt, there were folks telling her to give up on that crazy dream of being healed.  No doubt, her body was telling her that things might never get better. But something deep down inside of her wouldn’t allow her to be satisfied until she received what she knew she could have! So she swallowed her situation and kept believing by constantly telling herself, “I shall be healed”……. What are you telling yourself?

You’re going to get discouraged at some point in our life!  You’re going to come to a place where you feel rejected and cast down.  There’s going to be times when you feel like throwing up your hands and giving up.  But at the same time, when you know that you are chosen to be blessed, something inside of you won’t allow you to settle until you receive total Victory!

find deliverance, only to see her situation grow worse; But she still got up the next morning, telling herself, “I shall Be Healed” …..  What are You telling Yourself?  Are you telling yourself that you might be healed or that you shall be healed?  Are you telling yourself that you might get the victory or that you shall get the victory?  Are you telling yourself that you hope to come out or that you shall come out?  What are you telling yourself!!!

It’s easy to talk faith when you’re in church!  It’s easy to get excited about what the preacher tells you to repeat in church. But it’s only what you tell yourself, when you’re by yourself, that determines what you get.  Because what you tell yourself, that is what you really believe; and what you really believe, that, is what you shall receive….  What are you telling yourself?

This woman told herself for 12 years that “I shall be healed”.   Until one day, she heard that a man named Jesus was in town.  They said that He can heal the sick and raise the dead; they said that He makes the lame to walk and the dumb to talk; they say that He can even cause the blind to see!  When she heard about this Man named Jesus, she said to herself, that if it’s true what they say about this Man, then I know, I shall be healed.  And she begin to analyze the complexity of her position because she was in a community that held her as an unclean woman who was unfit to be seen in public; on top of that, she had to decide on a plan of how she was going to maneuver her way through a massive amount of people who was already pressing on Jesus for attention which she would have to overcome with her frail, weak, and exhausted body.

But she continued to tell herself that, I shall be healed!  And with the shear power of her faith, she pressed through that enormous amount of people, weaved her way passed the twelve apostles; took a hold of a portion of His clothing, and immediately, she was healed!  And out of all the people that were surrounding Jesus, and all the people that were pressing on Him; Not one time did Jesus feel excitement from anyone’s touch until after the touch of this woman.  That’s why the bible says in the book of Hebrews 11:6 that without faith it is impossible to please God, for he that comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.  Which means that, the only way you can ever get God’s full attention, is by exercising your faith.

You might have a physical sickness; or a financial sickness, or a marriage sickness; but whatever sickness it might be, if you expect to be delivered, than you have to exercise your faith and tell yourself, “I SHALL BE DELIVERED!!!  VICTORY IS MINE!!”
